The Default Patches¶
UNA ships with all eight banks full - 64 patches, each one different. Banks A to D are the best of every UNA collection, gathered into four banks and named after Emerson's poem Una, the sequencer's namesake.
Because they were drawn from all over, the banks are grouped by what a patch does, not what key it is in. Switching patches mid-performance can change key as well as character - if you need to stay in one key, build a bank of your own.
Bank A - Clouded Dreams¶
"Roving, roving, as it seems, / Una lights my clouded dreams."
A showcase tour, and the place to start. The UNA theme opens on loops of 7, 11 and 13, then every slot visits a different world: spa stillness, machine virtuosity no hand could play, deep space, stately layered chamber, songcraft, a horror film - landing on a climbing walk at 74. Every patch sounds finished the moment you press Play, and each one keeps evolving on its own.
Bank B - Half Seen¶
"If from home chance draw me wide, / Half-seen Una sits beside."
Cycles that refuse to line up: a waltz trapped in 4/4, a six-bar chord loop inside a sixteen-bar breath, melody lanes of thirteen against eleven against seven. The phrase is always there and never quite the same - one of these does not fully realign for seven days. Leave them running.
Bank C - Glowing Rail¶
"But if upon the seas I sail, / Or trundle on the glowing rail."
Patches that travel. Each states a vamp on lush ninths and sixths, then moves: a drone drop, a double-time act, a substitution spiral through a borrowed dominant, and a way home. Modal and unhurried, mostly in the C/A-minor and D-minor orbit - the interest is the shape of the journey, not the speed.
Bank D - Inward Sky¶
"At home a deeper thought may light / The inward sky with chrysolite."
Light pushed to both ends: sixteen flashes a second at one extreme, a whole-note melody over 192-bar tides at the other. Whispered triplets punctured by fortissimo, comic patter running out of breath, bell clusters used as percussion, and a grid that flips from three to straight time while you watch.
The house rules¶
Every track of every patch sends on MIDI Channel 1, so one connected polysynth, electric piano or keyboard sound plays the whole patch. To keep three tracks legible on one sound, the registers and dynamics are spread: chords sit soft in the middle, the bass strong below, the melody brighter on top. If you'd rather drive three instruments, re-channel the tracks from the Mixer - track channels are shared by every patch by default (Menu > CONFIG > Track Channels), so a pad for the chords, a plucked or lead voice for the melody, and a bass synth work for every patch here.
Nearly every patch ships with modulators already on, moving slowly, so it evolves as it sits. Open Modulate on any patch to see what is running, and switch slots off one at a time to hear what each is doing.
All the patches were designed at the default 120 BPM. Tempo is a Global - it stays wherever you set it when you switch patches - so every patch works at 120.
The factory progressions¶
The thirty progressions behind SUGGEST ▸ FACTORY on the chord chain. These are shapes, not
chains in a fixed key: pick one with the CONTROL Knob, press and turn the CONTROL Knob for the key, and UNA builds it.
So there is one Anthem rather than one per key, and all thirty are available in all twelve.
Degrees are written the way the chain shows them - upper case major, lower case minor, b for a
degree flattened out of the scale. Mode is the scale the degrees are counted in, which is what
keeps the labels clean: i - VII - VI in a minor key rather than i - bVII - bVI against a major
one. Lengths are in bars.

The chords in bold are the ones that are deliberately not what the mode would give you - a major V against a minor key, or a flattened II - and they are where most of the character in this list lives.
GENERATE (B3 in the same browser) picks one of these at random, in a random key.
Reading up on a patch¶
Every patch carries its own description in Midicake CONNECT. Open connect.midicake.com, go to the Patch Store, choose the UNA Patches - Default collection, and select any patch to read what it does, how it evolves and what to plug in.
The same Patch Store holds the other UNA collections - Classical, Electronic, Impossible, Slow Wave and The Composers - which is where most of the patches in banks A to D came from. A factory reset (Chapter 17) reinstalls all 64 of the defaults; see Patches & banks for how banks, saving and backup work.
